Senior Hamas official Mousa Abu Marzook has insisted that the movement has done more than necessary for the sake of internal reconciliation, Quds News reported on Friday.
Speaking to Al-Aqsa TV channel, Abu Marzook said that there is no choice for the Palestinians except ending the division and achieving national unity. He stressed that reconciliation is in the national interest of all sides.
“Hamas has done more than wanted for the sake of the reconciliation,” he explained.
For example, handing over the border crossings despite the fact that previous deals stipulated that Hamas should maintain the security of the crossings.
He also said that Hamas proposed the formation of joint security forces with Fatah for the sake of a serious partnership, but this was rejected. Hamas went ahead and left the crossings altogether.
Abu Marzook added that Fatah appears not to want reconciliation and has used many pretexts to undermine it. “Where is the reconciliation after November and December?” he asked. He pointed out that Fatah should have paid the salaries of the civil servants in Gaza, but it has not done so, whereas Hamas has fulfilled its pledges.
